Comorbidities

Overview

Comorbidity in vocal cord dysfunction/inducible laryngeal obstruction (VCD/ILO) can complicate diagnosis and treatment, leading to delays in appropriate management and poorer outcomes for patients. Common comorbidities of VCD/ILO include airway diseases (asthma and COPD), anxiety and depression, dysfunctional breathing, chronic rhinosinusitis, reflux disease, and tracheal disease.  These conditions may exacerbate and mimic symptoms of VCD/ILO. Therefore, a comprehensive approach that enables identification and effective management of coexisting comorbidities is necessary for successful treatment outcomes and improved quality of life for patients.

Understanding the relationship between VCD/ILO and its comorbidities is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Proper management involves addressing not only the laryngeal dysfunction but also the associated conditions that can trigger or exacerbate VCD symptoms.
